          He played for 12 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), starting his career with the California Angels, where he played from 1968 to 1972.

          Messersmith made history in the 1975 season when he became the first major league pitcher to enter free agency.

          In 1975, Messersmith pitched 19 complete games, a career-high, and posted a 21-6 record, and a 2.29 ERA. He was a three-time All-Star and won two Gold Glove awards in his career as well. Throughout his career, Messersmith recorded a total of 130 wins, 99 losses, and a 2.86 ERA.
