Amoret Whitaker used to quite enjoy hit TV show CSI.
Like other forensic scientists she thought the Crime Scene Investigation series could educate the public about their grisly, but vital, work.
"Then I started getting angry and shouting at the TV," smiles Amoret, 47.
I am a Senior Lecturer at the University of Winchester, teaching on the BSc (Hons) Forensic Investigation, BSc (Hons) Forensic Investigation and Cyber Security.
"You would see Dr Gil Grissom pick a maggot off a corpse with a pair of forceps and go, 'Oh yes, murdered 3pm Friday'. Because of that people expect us to be able to solve a case within an hour.
"We call it The CSI Effect.
I'll go to a crime scene and the police want an answer straight away."
Amoret does give cops answers, helping to solve some gruesome crimes and convict brutal killers.
But her work is slow and painstaking and brings home the full horror of what human beings are capable of.
